JPG vs PNG vs WebP: which format should you use?

Understand when to use JPG, PNG, and WebP for photos, screenshots, logos, and web performance.

JPG is usually best for photos because it can create much smaller files at acceptable quality. It does not support transparency.

PNG is better for screenshots, logos, and graphics with hard edges or transparent backgrounds, but files can become large.

WebP is efficient for websites and supports transparency, but some older workflows still ask for JPG or PNG.

Quick workflow

  1. Make a copy of the original image if it is important.
  2. Use the focused PixelForge tool for the task.
  3. Download the processed version and test it in the destination upload form.
